New Furnace Idea
Hello Wootzsmiths
I have been using a modified copper smelting furnace for my initial Wootz attempts. While it has been working to some extent. I will need to build a proper for the long run.
Hence forth, I have been on the prowl for any scrap that meets the size to work from.
I found this electric smoker for $25! It appears it should be great base, not sure if anyone has used one before. But I would love ideas to start sketching something up.
You can see it comes in several pieces, most noticeably I have a premade cover and think the bottom would make a great removable cap that I can cast refactory inside. That cover does fit over the bottom piece installed!
Another feature is the door, my thoughts are to not weld it shut. But to rather have an access panel that I can use for maintenance and be my burner location. Thought is to cast the burner funnel and have it made so I open it up and address issues from the inside and outside of the funnel area. I would make an adapter that feeds from it, on a removable burner set up.
DIA is 17 and the main section has a height of 19”

I wasn’t sure what grog was at first until I looked it up, shows how green I am with this!
Plan was to cast the bottom in and be non removable, I would be than be lining the sides and etc over it. Same with the burner jet opening for the furnace, it will be formed with the casting but I am still planning making the pipe and etc replaceable thru the insulation. I haven’t quite figured that part out yet. But if those pieces being removable is a positive feature I can surely try to implement that!!
The top will have two parts, a removeable cap with the jet hole and then a cover to help with solidification after fuel is cut.
Glad to here the sizing is good, I have proceeded to rough model some of the pieces so I can get a feel for scale and volume of insulation.
